Chico State freshmen combine for 30 points in win over rival Sonoma State

Chico State's freshmen foursome combined for 30 points, including every point, steal and assist during the decisive 13-0 run that propelled the Wildcats to a 64-59 win against Sonoma State Saturday night at Acker Gym. It marked their sixth straight win against the rival Seawolves.

Isaiah Ellis scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds before fouling out in 19 minutes. Corey Silverstrom and Tyler Harris scored seven points apiece. And Jalen McFerren hit the 3-pointer that gave the Wildcats the lead for good and started the 13-0 push.

The Wildcats trailed 37-35 before Silverstrom found McFerren for a 3-pointer from the right wing with 11:02 to play. Ellis grabbed an offensive rebound and

converted a three-point play and then grabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup to stretch the edge to 43-37. McFerren found the 6-foot-8 forward for a free-throw line jumper with 9:47 left and Silverstrom sank a 3-pointer 36 seconds later to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the night at 48-37.

Chico State won its third straight to move into a three-way tie for second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Wildcats are 10-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

Sonoma State dropped its fourth straight, falling to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA.

The Seawolves sliced the lead to four with just over five minutes remaining, but Silverstrom and Mike Rosaroso answered with driving buckets to keep them at bay. Tanner Giddings and Rosaroso each sank a pair of free throws in the final 15 seconds to put the game away.

Harris gave the Wildcats' offense a much-needed lift with seven points (two 3-pointers and a free throw) in a three-minute span late in the first half, helping them take a 23-20 lead into the locker room.

Chico State benefitted greatly from a 15-1 edge in second-chance points and 32-16 advantage in points in the paint. Jordan Semple helped in both facets, snagging a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats will hit the road next weekend to face Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay Friday and Saturday, respectively, before returning home for four straight.
