Rosaroso shines in overtime

Wildcats play third overtime game in last five and finally survive

This time overtime was Mike Rosaroso time. Rosaroso railed the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:49 left in the extra period and then made two crucial free throws with 28 seconds remaining to complete his late-game heroics that keyed the Chico State men's basketball team's 75-73 win against Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night at Acker Gym.

Rosaroso did his darndest to keep the Wildcats from needing their third overtime in five games to get the win. His 3-pointer with 6:02 remaining – the senior point guard's first points of the game – gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the second half at 59-52. He scored on a drive with 3:29 left to make it 63-58. And he knocked down two free throws with 13 seconds left in regulation to make it 65-62.

But Taylor Statham stuck a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to tie the game and then Rosaroso's twisting layup and Robert Duncan's tip-in attempt both rimmed off.

True freshman Jalen McFerren combined with Rosaroso to give the
Wildcats 18 points and two steals and just two turnovers in 45 minutes.
The Wildcats fell behind 72-70 in the extra period after the Coyotes' dynamic scorer, Jacob Thomas, twirled to the bucket for a basket that gave him 30 points.

Rosaroso answered emphatically with the 3-pointer that put Chico State in the lead for good.

But the Wildcats still had to endure one more moment of terror after his free throws stretched the lead to three with 28 ticks remaining. After a mad scramble for a loose ball, the Coyotes' Isaiah Morton was fouled with two-tenths of a second left attempting a desperation over-the-shoulder 3-point heave.

He went to the line with a chance to tie it, but missed the first free throw. After making the second he intentionally missed the third hoping for a tip-in, but Duncan sailed high into the air to grab the rebound and seal the victory.

Jordan Semple finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for the Wildcats, who improved to 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Drew Kitchens scored a season-high 12 points, joining Rosaroso with a dozen, and Corey Silverstrom scored 11 off the bench.
The Wildcats beat Cal State San Bernardino for the eighth time in nine meetings since the start of the 2011-12 season. Before that they had beaten the Coyotes just six times in 30 previous tries.

Thomas, the CCAA's leading scorer, sank 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 9-of-9 from the line for the Coyotes, who fell to 4-7 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA. Statham added 18 points.

The Wildcats will enter their second straight home weekend – hosting San Francisco State and Sonoma State next Friday and Saturday, respectively – in a three-way tie for second place in the CCAA with Sonoma State and UC San Diego. They're a game behind Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Stanislaus.

Cal State San Bernardino is one of four teams tied for sixth at 4-4 in the tightly packed race for the six CCAA Championship Tournament spots as they near the midway point of the conference schedule.
