Walker gives Wildcats another walkoff win

Chico State sweeps series with weekend’s third win in last at-bat

Box Score Another day. Another dogpile. Another wild Wildcats celebration between first and second base.

Blake Walker wacked a two-out single to right field, plating pinch runner Robert Hook, and the Chico State baseball team finished its day at the yard the same way it did Friday and Saturday: by partying on the Nettleton Stadium infield.

The 11th-ranked Wildcats beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 7-6 in 11 innings to complete the series sweep and improve to 30-7 overall and 22-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Peter Miller played the hero with game-winning hits Friday and Saturday afternoon. Sunday, Miller was hit by a pitch to start the two-out game-winning rally. After Miller moved to second on a passed ball, Connor Huesers was walked intentionally. Hook, a relief pitcher, came in to pinch run and slid home without a throw on Walker's second walkoff hit of the season.

Baseball player Ryan McClellan
Ryan McCellan mashed a tying two-run homer in the ninth to send the game into extra frames. Luke Barker (4-0) threw four shutout innings in relief, striking out five, to earn the win.

The 11th-ranked Wildcats came from behind in all four games this weekend and have now won 16 of their last 18. They're the sixth team in the history of the program to win at least 30 of their first 37 games.

They trailed 6-3 Sunday before getting a run closer in the sixth when Huesers doubled and scored on an error.

In the ninth, Eric Angerer drew a one-out walk and then McClellan crushed a ball over the left-field wall to tie the game. It was his first home run of the season. He also doubled and finished with three hits.

Cody Slader went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and pair of RBI, plating the game's first run with a ground ball in the second and then giving Chico State a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a two-out RBI-double.

Ryne Clark tripled and scored in the third to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. He's now reached base safely in 21 straight. Ruben Padilla singled in the third to increase his hitting streak to 13 games.

Huesers went 2-for-5 and Walker 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Just two days after firing five no-hit innings in Friday's 13-inning win, Barker allowed only two hits in four frames. He finished the weekend with 14 strikeouts in nine shutout innings, allowing two singles and no walks. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 35 innings on the mound.

The Wildcats will head to a four-game series at Cal State San Bernardino beginning Thursday with a magic number of five to clinch a CCAA Championship Tournament berth and their 18th postseason appearance in the last 19 years.

The series begins with a single game Thursday at 3 p.m., continues with a doubleheader Friday at 11 a.m., and concludes with a single game Saturday at 11.
