Woodrum sticks it to Stanislaus with golden goal

Wildcats hand Warriors first home loss since 2012

TURLOCK – The Chico State women's soccer team did what no other team has done over the course of the last two regular seasons Sunday by beating Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. Katie Woodrum rocked Warrior Stadium with a left-footed blast from 12 yards out 2:32 into the second overtime to send the Wildcats home winners.

In doing so, she helped the Wildcats tighten their grip on sole possession of third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, greatly increasing their postseason odds with just three regular-season matches remaining. Chico State improved to 8-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the CCAA with its second golden-goal victory in three days. The 21st-ranked Warriors, who had won 17 straight regular season matches at home, fell to 11-4 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA.

Pooja Patel assistd on the game-winning goal.
Woodrum won a goal kick near midfield with a header to plant the seed for her golden goal. Her header fell to the feet of Pooja Patel 10 yards inside the midfield stripe. The quick-footed freshman made a sensational spin move to her right to clear a defender and then attacked the defense with a head-on dribble. Woodrum, meanwhile, made a beautiful connected run to her left just behind Nicole Roberts, who took the defense with her with an angled left-to-right run out ahead of the pack. Woodrum filled the space in behind and Patel split two defenders with a pass at the top of the box. Woodrum took a touch and hit a left-footed blast into net inside the far post from 12 yards out for the win.

Chico State's win was its first against Cal State Stanislaus in 10 matches. However, the Wildcats still lead the series 15-9-6.

Wildcats goalkeeper Brianna Furner made five saves for her second straight shutout and sixth of the season. Defenders Halima Abdelshife, Torri Sims, Cassi Scroggins and Jojo Smith played all 103 minutes to help secure the shutout.

The Wildcats wrap up the regular season with three straight home games. They'll play San Francisco State Friday, Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday and Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, Oct. 30.
