No words were necessary. The first cold Northern California night of the season painted the picture. The Chico State men's soccer team has chilled considerably since the start of the season. The Wildcats once again struggled to finish offensively in a scoreless draw against Cal State East Bay Friday at University Soccer Stadium.
Justin WalmsleyChico State outshot the visitors 11-8 and earned a 6-5 edge in corner kicks, but came up empty for the fourth time in seven California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matches.
The Wildcats are now 6-5-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the CCAA. They remain five points out of sixth place – the top six teams at the end of the conference schedule will earn a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament – but now have one fewer match remaining to try to make up the difference.
They travel to Cal State Stanislaus Sunday before wrapping up the regular season with three straight home games.
Chico State freshman goalkeeper Luke Dennison made a pair of saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the season. Kenny Rosecrance, Sean Gallagher, Michael Janjigian and Justin Walmsley played all 110 minutes as his last line of defense.
Cal State East Bay is now 3-6-4 overall and 0-4-3 in the CCAA.
