Box Score 2 Box Score 1 Mike Botelho got the final out of the 13th-ranked Chico State baseball team’s doubleheader sweep of visiting Cal State Stanislaus today at Nettleton Stadium. Sounds about right. The thing is, Botelho got the first 20 outs of the nightcap as well.
Botelho, whose 13 saves last season are the seventh most in Chico State single-season history, made his third start with the Wildcats his best. He gave up just one run in his first complete game in improving to 2-1 in three starts.
Chico State won the first game 20-5 and the second 8-1 to improve to 18-5 overall and 11-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The sweep put the Wildcats atop the CCAA standings, though they’ll have to complete the four-game sweep of Cal State Stanislaus tomorrow in order to stay there. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
Botelho, inserted into the starting rotation three weeks ago, scattered eight hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked one. Troy Neiman nailed down the win in the opener, allowing just one run on two hits in five innings to improve to 3-2. He struck out four and walked one.
Everyone who had an opportunity contributed to Chico State’s offensive explosion of 28 runs on 30 hits. All 14 players contributed at least one hit, run, and/or RBI.
The Wildcats put crooked numbers on the board in each of the opener’s first four innings and won going away. Blake Gibbs bashed a three-run homer and drove in four in the game. Cody Webber went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Jon Peters pumped out four hits and drove in a pair of runs. Pierson Jeremiah went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Cody Slader was 2-for-5 with two RBI. And Kenny Corona contributed a two-run single.
Eric Angerer set the tone in the nightcap with a leadoff double. He finished 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Jeremiah singled and scored in the first. Austin Prott, who reached base all but one time he came to the plate Saturday, walked and scored in the first to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Jeremiah, Gibbs, Webber and Peters all drove in runs in the nightcap. Webber went 2-for-3.
