Whether it’s in sports or in life, a good first impression is always something to strive for. Chico State women’s golfer Trinity Hernandez accomplished that feat and then some during the Wildcats’ season-opening tournament—the Indio native made her college debut a truly memorable one by posting a Top 10 finish at the Sea Lion Invitational in San Diego. Her immediate success on the links makes Hernandez the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Hernandez finished the two-round Sea Lion Invitational with a score of 7-over par 151, good for a share of seventh place overall. The numbers, though, only tell part of the story—for most of the tournament, Hernandez was squarely in the mix for medalist honors, and on the final day briefly held the top spot on the individual leader board.
In her first-ever round as a ’Cat, Hernandez shot a team-best 74 on the par-72, 5,899-yard Rancho Bernardo Inn course. She posted three birdies in the round, and was 1-under through the initial 14 holes. Hernandez ended the day just one stroke off the lead, sharing second place with four other golfers.
In the Sea Lion Invitational’s final round, Hernandez got off to a great start, playing even par over the first eight holes, vaulting her into first place in the 61-player field. She eventually cooled off on the back nine, but still finished strong with three straight pars to card a 5-over 77 to secure the season-opening Top 10 effort.
Hernandez and the rest of the Chico State women’s golf team will be in Goodyear, Arizona September 27–28, teeing it up at the Golf Club of Estrella as part of the RJGA Shootout at Estrella.
