Alex Robie’s Chico State men’s track and field decathlon debut was dynamite. The junior transfer from American River Community College opened the 2020 season with a new personal record 6,501 points—an NCAA provisional qualifying mark—in a second-place finish at the 35th annual Chico Multi Event Classic at University Track Stadium to earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
His point total is higher than any Wildcat scored last season and would have ranked 11th in the nation in 2019. Robie currently ranks second in the nation behind Cal Poly Pomona’s Kyle Lawson, a 2019 All-America and the defending Chico Multi champion.
Robie racked up six PRs out of the 10 events, three each day. He posted PRs in the 100 meters (11.20), long jump (6.79), and shot put (10.56) Thursday, finishing the first half of the meet in second place.
On Friday, Robie PR’d in the discus (33.04 meters), javelin (47.90) and 1,500 meters (5:04.44).
Robie claimed the 2018 California Community College State Championship in the decathlon, posting a winning score of 6,133—his PR until last week. He won the Big 8 Conference title in the high jump (1.90 meters) and runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles, for which he boasts a zippy PR of 14.59.
Robie and the Wildcats will be in Turlock this week for the Stanislaus State Kim Duyst Invitational.
