Chico State senior outfielder Eddie Zavala reached base seven times in nine plate appearances, including a home run and crucial two-run double as the Wildcats won one of three in their season-opening series at 21st-ranked Azusa Pacific over the weekend.

The transfer from LA Harbor Community College had an on-base percentage of 2.178, slugged 1.400 and posted an on-base percentage of .778 to earn the baseball team's first Wildcat of the Week recognition of the season.

A starter throughout most of the 2019 campaign, Zavala went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in Friday's series and season opener. He started the Wildcats' next two games and did his best to make sure he'll be starting again when the Wildcats open at home against Fresno Pacific next weekend.

Zavala went 2-for-2 with a solo home run that staked Chico State to a 1-0 lead in Friday's nightcap. He was hit by a pitch in his other plate appearance.

In Saturday's 13-3 victory, Zavala went 1-for-2 with a two-run double that hit the top of the fence with the bases loaded, doubling Chico State's lead to 6-2. He also walked three times and scored three runs.

Zavala and the Wildcats open their home campaign Friday at 3 p.m. against Fresno Pacific. They'll wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
