Chico State junior pitcher Clayton Gelfand fired six shutout innings in the Wildcats' 4-0 victory over Point Loma Nazarene on Friday to earn Wildcat of the Week honors and stretch his scoreless innings streak to start the season to 13.
Gelfand combined with relievers Stuart Bradley, Torgen Soderlund and Hunter Haworth for a six-hitter and Chico State's second shutout of the season. Gelfand, who allowed five hits and a walk while striking out four, has started both. He's allowed just nine baserunners and struck out nine in 13 innings of work.
Gelfand retired the first 11 batters he faced and got out of his only real jam Friday by striking out the Sea Lions' No. 5 hitter, Joseph Keller, with the bases loaded to end the sixth.
In two starts this season, Gelfand has now allowed just seven hits, while striking out nine. He's faced just four batters over the minimum during his two outings.
Gelfand and Stanislaus State starter Jordan Kron are the only two pitchers in the California Collegiate Athletic Association to have thrown at least 13 innings this season without allowing a run.
Gelfand is scheduled to make his next start Friday against Academy of Art at Nettleton Stadium. His first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
