Chico State sophomore Corey Silverstrom scored a career-high 27 points, including 21 in the second half, to lift the 19th-ranked Wildcats to an 83-73 win at Cal State San Marcos Thursday night in Oceanside and earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
The win momentarily moved Chico State (15-3, 9-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association) into sole possession of first place.
Silverstrom sank all five of his 3-point attempts in the second half, including two in a row after the Cougars had taken a 1-point lead with 3:47 left, putting Chico State back in the lead for good.
Silverstrom also shined on the defensive end. Tasked with guarding the Cougars' second-leading scorer and top 3-point shooter, Taran Brown, the 6-foot-5 Silverstrom helped limit the much bigger Brown (6-8) to eight points and no made threes.
In four starts this season, Silverstrom is averaging 20.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.
He ranks third in the CCAA in 3-point percentage (.472) and fourth in made threes despite coming off the bench for much of the season.
Silverstrom currently ranks third in Chico State history in career 3-point percentage, having knocked down 43 percent in his career (64-147).
Silverstrom and the Wildcats host Stanislaus State Saturday at 7:30.
