One area that the Chico State women’s basketball team aggressively addressed in assembling the 2011-12 squad was rebuilding and strengthening its frontcourt. The Wildcats recruited well, seeing solid play this season from their new forwards, not the least of which has come from junior transfer Ymonne Davidson-Mays, who has provided the consistency down low that Head Coach Brian Fogel was looking for. Last week the former Butte College standout turned in three top-notch performances, making Davidson-Mays the Wildcat of the Week.
Monday against Cal State Stanislaus, Davidson-Mays was 4-for-9 from the field, including hitting a 3-point bucket, scoring nine points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out two assists and grabbing three steals. Friday, Davidson-Mays played just 16 minutes, but still contributed seven points and a rebound in the Wildcats’ 53-39 victory over Cal State San Bernardino. Davidson-Mays concluded a solid week Saturday against UC San Diego, posting six points, six rebounds and an assist in the ’Cats’ 97-91 double-overtime loss to the No. 3-ranked Tritons.
Davidson-Mays currently ranks as Chico State’s top rebounder on the season, averaging 5.3 boards a game, and is fourth on the team in scoring, chipping in with an average of seven points a contest. Though she’s taken only eight shots from beyond the 3-point arc, Davidson-Mays is fourth among Wildcats players with five treys and is shooting an impressive 63 percent from long distance.
Davidson-Mays and the Wildcats wrap up their five-game homestand this weekend, taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday and Cal State L.A. Saturday at Acker Gym.
