It’s no secret that Ferid Celosmanovic is one of the most prolific scorers in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), and even with opponents frequently double- and even triple-teaming him, the senior forward is still able to deliver big scores when the Wildcats need them most. Such was the case this past weekend, when the All-American accounted for all the Chico State offense in a pair of 1-0 road victories. His heroics on the pitch have earned Celosmanovic Wildcat of the Week honors.
Friday, Chico State nipped San Francisco State as Celosmanovic bent a corner kick inside the far post fifteen minutes into the second half to provide the lone score of the contest and give Chico State a 1-0 victory over the host Gators.
Sunday, in the Wildcats’ 1-0 win at South Division leader Cal Poly Pomona, Celosmanovic struck in the second minute of overtime for his fifth game-winning goal of the season and the 10th of his career. Fellow senior Nick Tedrow touched a through ball to the right side of the goal, just off the edge of the goalie box, where Celosmanovic waited to punch it home low.
The 2010 CCAA Offensive Player of the Year and CCAA Newcomer of the Year has now scored eight goals this season and 21 in his brief two-year Chico State career.
The Wildcats will continue their quest for a CCAA Championship Tournament berth when they host Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay this weekend. Sunday’s matchup against Cal State Monterey Bay will include “Senior Day” ceremonies during which Celosmanovic will be celebrated as one of the best strikers in Chico State men’s soccer history.
