Wildcats Look Ahead After Tough Opening Weekend in Seaside

SEASIDE, Calif. – It was another challenging day in Seaside as Chico State softball dropped the final two games of its opening CCAA series against Cal State Monterey Bay.

With the four-game sweep, the Wildcats fall to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play, with plenty of softball still left to be played this season.

Game 1: Chico State 1, CSUMB 2

The Wildcats battled in a tight contest to open Saturday's doubleheader, outhitting the Otters 5-1. However, a big first inning proved to be the difference, as Monterey Bay plated two early runs and held on for the win.

Chico State struck first when Aiyana Curry grounded out to second base, allowing Ali Lewis to score the Wildcats' lone run of the game.

Hannah Levy led Chico State with the team's only multi-hit performance of the contest.

Amelie Valdez turned in a strong complete-game effort in the circle, retiring nine Otters, but was tagged with her third loss of the season to move to 3-3 overall.

Game 2: Chico State 4, CSUMB 7

The series finale featured plenty of offense, with both teams recording nine hits. After Monterey Bay grabbed an early lead, the Wildcats kept pace until the Otters broke the game open with a key inning in the fourth.

Ali Lewis and Marissa Anderson each tallied two hits to lead Chico State at the plate.

Bella Tavares and Peyton Wells combined for seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk while facing 21 batters.

Chico State returns home for its conference home opener against No. 1 Cal State San Marcos (22-1, 4-0 CCAA) on Friday, March 13, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
