Early Goals Prove Costly as Wildcats Fall to Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Chico State men's soccer team lost to Cal State Monterey Bay 3-0 on Sunday after the Otters scored in the 17th, 36th and 48th minutes. Chico State finished with nine shots, five on goal, and generated eight corner kicks in the second half.

Nickolas Molina saved Josiah Siqueiros' shot in the third minute before the first half moved through a foul-heavy stretch that included yellow cards to Samir Warner in the 10th minute and Braedyn Brown in the 11th. The Otters broke through in the 17th minute on a team goal for a 1-0 lead, then kept pressure on with a Philip Wolny shot, a corner kick and two more attempts before Gage Harrison put the Wildcats' first shot wide in the 25th. The 'Cats generated consecutive shots on frame from Simon Vaca-Lorenzi and Carter Haynes in the 35th minute, but Jerry Godfryd saved both, and Aziah Nelson scored in the 36th minute off assists from Wolny and Godfryd to make it 2-0. Xavier Elder and Haynes each forced late saves from Godfryd, while the Otters added three first-half corner kicks and carried the 2-0 lead into halftime.

Chico State earned an early second-half corner, but the Otters added to their lead when Mason Ward converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute to make it 3-0. The Wildcats pushed back with a corner in the 51st minute, a Harrison shot wide right, a Jack Shane attempt over the top and another corner in the 56th minute. The half then moved through a foul-heavy stretch, ending with a red card to Maverick Wilson in the 68th minute, though Chico State still generated a corner and a Jovan Radovic shot in the 69th. Molina saved a Kai Martin shot in the 74th minute, and the 'Cats created three late corners before Radovic put a shot on frame in the 86th, but Godfryd made the save and the Otters closed out the 3-0 result.

Up next, Chico State visits Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at 3 p.m. at The Cage in San Marcos.
