Wildcats Split Opening Day in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – Kicking off the 2026 season in Irvine, as the program has historically done, Chico State softball split the opening day with a win over APU and a narrow extra-inning loss to No. 3 Western Washington.

Game 1 vs. APU

The Wildcats secured their first win of the 2026 campaign against Azusa Pacific behind a strong performance in the circle from senior pitcher Amelie Valdez. A consistent starter for the 'Cats since last spring, Valdez struck out seven batters in her first complete game of the season. Allowing just one walk on the day, she held the Cougars to a single run while preserving a one-run advantage.

Freshman Lucy Sherburne was the hero in the season opener, recording her first career hit and driving in two RBIs in the fifth inning—proving to be the decisive blow in her collegiate debut. Brianna Swihart and Ali Lewis delivered back-to-back hits in the fifth to load the bases, setting the stage for Sherburne's clutch knock that brought the runners home.

Game 2 vs. No. 3 Western Washington

The Wildcats closed out the first day of the tournament against the national semifinalist Vikings, marking their first meeting since 2023. Despite the score ultimately tipping in favor of Western Washington, Chico State's defense played a key role in limiting the Vikings' powerful offense and pushing the contest into extra innings.

Bella Tavares earned the start in the circle, striking out two batters and issuing no walks across 5.1 innings of work.

Ali Lewis continued her early scoring streak, this time with a clutch triple into right field that brought Hannah Levy home in the fourth inning, tying the game at one apiece.

Despite a slow offensive start to the season, the 'Cats consistently put runners in scoring position. However, well-hit balls often found gloves, as the Vikings efficiently relieved pressure—offering a glimpse of the consistency that has fueled their back-to-back Division II World Series appearances.

Chico State will face the Vikings once more this season in Northern California at the Cal Poly Humboldt Tournament in March.

The Wildcats open the season with a strong split and will play three more games in Orange County. Saturday's slate features matchups against Chaminade (PacWest) and Colorado State Pueblo (RMAC), beginning at 8 a.m. against the Silverswords.
