HAYWARD, Calif. – Another clutch performance from the Wildcats secured a hard-fought 75-72 victory over Cal State East Bay on Saturday night. Caden Harris and the Wildcats delivered in the final minutes, making crucial plays to fend off a Pioneers squad seeking a much-needed win.
With the game tied at 69-69 and under three minutes remaining, JoJo Murphy broke the deadlock with a layup, followed by a mid-range jumper from Harris to give Chico State a slim lead. Up by just one with 14 seconds to go, the Wildcats needed a stop—and they got it.
A contested three-point attempt from the Pioneers came up short, and Harris secured the rebound before being fouled immediately. He calmly knocked down both free throws to extend the lead to three. On the ensuing possession, the Wildcats forced a turnover before the Pioneers could even attempt a game-tying shot, with Harris sealing the win by coming up with the steal.
With the victory, Chico State extends its winning streak to four, improving to 19-5 overall and 15-3 in CCAA play. Meanwhile, the loss delivers a tough blow to Cal State East Bay, dropping the Pioneers to 8-10 in conference play and below Cal State LA and Cal Poly Pomona in the race for the fifth spot in the standings.
Harris finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Isaiah Kerr led the scoring effort with 19 points and five assists.
Murphy added 17 points and five assists of his own, and Trae Taylor dominated the paint with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams battled evenly throughout the game, but once again, Chico State's efficiency from beyond the arc proved to be the difference. The Wildcats shot a scorching 50% from three-point range, while holding the Pioneers to just 34.8% shooting from deep.
Now 2-0 on their current road trip, the Wildcats turn their attention to Cal State LA, another opponent on a win streak and fighting for a postseason berth. The last time the Wildcats and the Golden Eagles met, the 'Cats were able to pull away late in a thrilling 95-86 win.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 20.
