TURLOCK – The first week of May usually means one thing for the sport of track & field: it's championship time.
While still looking to set NCAA provisional marks, the Chico State men's and women's teams will also look to add hardware at the CCAA Championships, held Thursday-Saturday at Stanislaus State's Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.
The final day of the championship meet will be streamed live on the CCAA Network.
Both Chico State squads are looking to dethrone Cal Poly Pomona, which had swept both the men's and women's team titles the last two seasons while the Wildcats took second. Several Wildcats are also looking to defend their event titles. Marissa D'Atri will be seeking a three-peat in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run and Josie Peterson will be defending her javelin title. Also looking to get back to the top of the podium for the second time in three years are Aries Harris in the javelin and Rebecca Graham in the pole vault.
The Wildcats have set 17 NCAA Division II provisional marks throughout the season, nine from the men's side and eight from the women's. D'Atri has a provisional stamp in three events in the 1,500-meter, 5,000-meter and 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:08.68 in the steeplechase is currently the second best in the nation.
