Wildcats Shutdown Gators in CCAA Showdown

Chico, Calif. - The Chico State men's basketball team continues to impress after cruising to an 84-65 win over the Gators on Saturday, their fourth win at home in a row. Impressively, the Wildcats have only given up a single game at home all season, not losing at home since their conference home opener against San Bernardino on November 30th.

The Wildcats improve to 16-4 (11-4 CCAA) after their decisive win over San Francisco State, keeping them in the chase for the top slots of the CCAA postseason tournament.

Following suit after their impressive win over Cal State East Bay on Thursday, the "Cats put up incredible numbers in a 48 point-first half performance. Shooting 69 percent from the field on 16 for 23 shooting, 70 percent from three-point land, sinking seven of their ten attempts.

Junior Adam Afifi showed his scoring versatility, scoring 18 points and five rebounds. Afifi was the most accurate Wildcat on the day, shooting 71 percent from the field and scoring five baskets, with three coming from beyond the arc. Five more points came from the free throw line, only missing a single attempt against the Gators.

Scoring 20 of their 27 free throw attempts, the Wildcats show consistency from the line, cutting just above their season average of 70 percent from the free throw line.

Off the bench and onto the top of the stat sheet, Evan Oliver produced another impressive performance in only 19 minutes on the court. Scoring six baskets from the field, Oliver was his usual self, pressuring the Gators defensively and forcing turnover down low for Kelvin Wright Jr. to snatch up.

The Gators were struggling to find a response for Chico State's scoring run in the first half, battling back to within 13 points with only two minutes remaining after a string of turnovers gave the Gators a boost.

The Wildcats broke through high press attempts, mixed with clutch free throw shooting, to secure their 11th CCAA conference win.

With four more wins, the Wildcats will travel to Southern California for two crucial matchups against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona next week, starting in Pomona. As the CCAA conference season approaches, the Wildcats will need to scoop up all the wins they can to secure a spot in the postseason tournament in March.
