SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Chico State volleyball team made a late effort to avoid the sweep, but Cal State San Bernardino rallied in the end to take the match in three (13-25, 12-25, 23-25) at Coussoulis Arena Saturday evening.
Chico State falls to 8-13 overall and 5-9 in the CCAA while San Bernardino moves to 12-9 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
Cashe Olswang continues to lead the offensive, tallying 14 kills. Claire Nordeen had another double-double performance with 19 assists and 13 digs. Jessie Camarillo also led the effort in the back row with 10 digs.
While Chico State hit .124 on the attack, San Bernardino had a good evening with .382. The Wildcats were unable to stop Ashley Robinson and Jordan Cherniss, recording 18 and 11 kills, respectively.
After the Coyotes took early leads to take command of the first two games, the third set was the Wildcats' best chance of avoiding the sweep. At one point, Chico State outscored San Bernardino 4-1 to take an 11-9 lead. The Wildcats would stay up front until the Coyotes won 6-of-7 rallies to reclaim the lead at 19-17. Chico State reversed the momentum back to them after a 5-1 rally gave them a 22-20 lead. San Bernardino got four straight kills, two from M'Kera Drake to move into match-point. Savannah Wilson got the kill to move to within one, but Savannah Hoffman got the winning spike for the Coyotes.
The Wildcats' head back to Northern California to finish the road trip, starting with Sonoma State Thursday at 7 p.m. Chico State took the last meeting in five sets at Pleasant Valley High School back in September. The Seawolves are currently coming off a five-set defeat to Cal State San Marcos this afternoon.
