CHICO, Calif. – Cashe Olswang recorded 10 kills, Claire Nordeen dished out 27 assists and Jessie Camarillo had 13 digs as the Chico State volleyball team's season came to an end on Saturday after Cal State East Bay took the finale in three (15-25, 21-25, 17-25).
Chico State closes the book on 2024 with a 9-15 overall record and a 6-11 outcome in the CCAA, finishing ninth in the standings.
The Wildcats missed out on being spoilers to the Pioneers (12-13, 7-10 CCAA) postseason ambitions. East Bay got the result it needed earlier with Cal State LA beating Sonoma State to set up and win-and-in opportunity.
Chico State ended the match hitting an average of .196 on the attack while East Bay hit .357. The Wildcats did win the dig column 42-36.
Both teams kept close to each other to start the match until the Pioneers went on a 7-2 run to take command of the game.
Chico State started the second set on a positive note, opening with a 5-1 lead. It had led 11-5 until the Pioneers came back and tied the game at 12. East Bay got on a couple of 3-point runs to add cushion to its lead. Down 24-18, the Wildcats had a little rally going with Maria Wahl earning a side out, an attack error and a service ace from Camarillo. The Pioneers eventually got the game-winning point to take a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, the Wildcats responded to the Pioneers winning the first two rallies by winning the next four. It was tied 7-7 when the Pioneers went on a 7-1 run to take the lead and control of the game.
