Shutout Streak Ends But No. 5 'Cats Keep Perfect Record Intact

TURLOCK – After six impressive shutout victories to start the season, the No. 5 Chico State men's soccer team gave up its first goal but the Wildcats bested Stanislaus State 3-2 on Saturday to improve to 7-0 on the year.

The Wildcats went 567 minutes on the pitch without allowing a goal.

Though this match was scheduled by the CCAA, it will not count towards the conference standings. The two teams will go on the conference record when they meet again in Chico for the regular-season finale.

Chico State got on the board in the seventh minute, when Adrian Fontanelli won a penalty kick after the Warriors (3-4-0) committed a handball in the box following a corner kick.

It was Stanislaus State's Tyler Tipton who ended Chico State's shutout streak in the 27th minute. Sammy Villanueva fed a through ball to him up the middle, Tipton dribbled while battling Carson Zarate and was able to get a right foot to knock into the goal once he got inside the goal box.

The Wildcats broke the tie in the 31st minute in beautiful fashion. The Wildcats recovered a loose ball and Dawson White held on long enough for the chess pieces to be set. He then chipped it into the box where it found the head Jacob Burnison who volleyed it to Miles Rice for another perfectly timed header in the box for his fifth goal of the season.

Chico State took a 2-1 lead into the second half and it was short lived as Stanislaus State net the equalizer again from Villanueva.

The difference in the match was in the 58th minute. Fontanelli chipped a corner kick into the box where a Warrior defender attempted to clear it. Preston Moll fired it back and it made it way through the crowded box and into the goal.

Though he lost the shutout, Emanuel Padilla made two saves out of 14 shot attempts on the night. His counterpart on the other side of the goal, Robby Ross, had to make three saves on 16 shot attempts.

Chico State returns home to officially open CCAA play Friday against Cal State East Bay. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
