Wolves best Wildcats in four sets

TURLOCK – Taylor Whyte recorded a dozen kills, Brooke Ono had 34 assists and Zoe DiNardo had 13 digs, but the Chico State volleyball team could only take one win in a four-set (15-25, 25-20, 20-25, 19-25) defeat to Western Oregon at the Stan State Tournament Friday evening.

Gwyneth Wentzel had eight kills and DiNardo had seven to help the effort up front. The Wildcats (2-1) nearly hit 20 percent the entire match.

Western Oregon (2-0) had one-upped Chico State, hitting .284 on the evening but .481 with only one error in the fourth game.

The lone Wildcat win came in the second set. Trailing 19-16, Chico State had the biggest rally of the very young season thanks to 10 Western Oregon errors in 11 rallies. Whyte made three kills in six attempts while Ono made seven assists.

Chico State will make one final visit to Fitzpatrick Arena for the weekend taking on Western New Mexico Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
