ROHNERT PARK, Calif.: After splitting the CCAA conference opening matchups at home, the Wildcats took to the road for their first conference road trip starting in Sonoma. In a big rivalry game against the Seawolves, the Wildcats earned their second win by a score of 87-72.
The Wildcats opened up the game with an 8-0 scoring run against the Seawolves—Adam Afifi and Jojo Murphy opened up the scoring with back-to-back three-pointers. They improve to 2-1 in conference play and 6-1 overall after Thursday night's win in Rohnert Park.
Afifi and Joshua Hamilton posted strong stat lines, adding sixteen points each in the conference win. Affif recorded a new season-high rebounds with nine, only one shy of recording his first collegiate double-double.
Hamilton led the team from three-point range, shooting three for five from beyond the arc. The team shooting 50-percent from the field and 37-percent from three-point range.
The Wildcats held a firm grip on the lead through most of the game, leading over fifteen points for 15 minutes in the second half. Their defense held all of the Seawolves starters under double-digit points, contesting their best shooters and holding the home team to only four made 3-pointers of the twenty attempted.
Sonoma outscored Chico State 42-25 in the paint but made up for trouble under the basket by sinking ten 3-pointers of their own.
Evan Oliver subbed in, brought his speed, and added fifteen points of his own while going flawless at 8 for eight from the free throw line.
The Cats converted seven of their nine steals to points, with twelve points coming in the first half.
Senior Kelvin Wright Jr. bounced back from a poor shooting night against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, scoring double-digit points and grabbing seven boards. He led the team with a career-high six assists.
The Wildcats will travel south to Cal State San Marcos to take on the Cougars in another CCAA Conference road game. The tip-off will be at 3 p.m. and broadcast on the CCAA Network.
