‘Cats Take Opening Set, Seawolves Claim Match

ROHNERT PARK – Looking to build on to the momentum following the Chico State volleyball team's five-set win on Thursday, the Wildcats won the first game against Sonoma State, but the Seawolves responded and claimed the match in four (25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 20-25) in the Wolves' Den Saturday.

Chico State falls to 5-15 overall and 2-14 in the CCAA. Sonoma State, meanwhile, moves to 16-7 overall and with an 11-5 conference record it qualified for the upcoming CCAA Tournament.

Zoe DiNardo tallied 16 kills on the afternoon, making it the fifth straight match she has reached double digits in that category. She also had 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double match and her third in the last four contests.

Although the rest of the field did not reach double figures in the kills column, the Wildcats combined to hit .221 on the day, but it wasn't enough as the Seawolves hit .338 on the attack.

Lexi Carpenter made 16 digs and Brooke Ono had 32 assists.

Sonoma State was up by four entering mid-point of the first game until Chico State went on an 8-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. DiNardo had three kills during that momentum. The Seawolves narrowed the deficit to 20-19 but the Wildcats would win five of the remaining seven serves to take the opener.

The second set saw both sides going neck-and-neck in the beginning. Sonoma would break a 9-point tie and went on a 10-1 run to take complete control of the game.

Chico State used a 7-3 run in its favor to take an 11-9 lead at the start of the third set. It was short lived as a 9-3 momentum shifted back to Sonoma State and gave the Seawolves an 18-14 lead and would stay up front until the 25th point was reached.

Both sides battled early into the fourth set until the Seawolves won 5-of-6 rallies take an 11-9 lead. Chico State kept the deficit under four points but couldn't find any consistent rhythm the rest of the way.

With the road schedule complete, Chico State will finish the season in Acker Gym, starting Friday with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Saturday against defending CCAA and NCAA West Region champions Cal State LA. Both matches are at 1 p.m.
