CARSON, Calif. - After falling behind in the first half from an early Toros goal, the Wildcats needed to secure a result in Sunday's match to keep pace with the top of the CCAA standings. Their lifeline came in the 62nd minute when Thomas Douglas found himself in the right place at the right time when a Robert Lloyd cross slipped right in front of the net.
An unlucky break for the Wildcats on a corner kick in the first half resulted in a goal for the Toros, putting the no.3 team in the nation behind early.
The Toros were relentless throughout Sunday afternoon, taking 23 shots but only five, giving Emanuel Padilla trouble. Padilla made four saves throughout the match but was held on his toes by constant pressure from the home side.
Despite the stark contrast in offense statistics, the Wildcats had their chances throughout the match. Preston Moll almost snuck a powerful left-footed cross over the Toros keeper, only to be barely punched over the bar.
Douglas, who equalized the match for Chico State, notched his first goal in his career for the program, an important one at that. Robbie Lloyd recorded the first assist of his short time with the Wildcats.
Junior captain Preston Moll continued to be a solid defensive and offensive presence for the squad, leading his team in shots with three. Dillon Hunter and Douglas added two of their own to the 'Cats total.
This tie brings the Wildcats conference record to 3-1-4, and they maintain a tie for fifth in the CCAA standings with Sonoma State. Five points separate fifth and sixth with three games remaining in the regular conference schedule—the top six teams will qualify for the postseason tournament hosted at Cal Poly Humboldt this year.
The remaining three matches for Chico State will be on home soil, hosting San Francisco State this Friday at 4:30 p.m. and broadcasted on the CCAA Network.Â
