In a match that featured Chico State's California Collegiate Athletic Association-leading defense and the high-powered scoring attack of 13
th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, something had to give. In the end the Broncos prevailed with a 2-0 win that snapped Chico State's five-match unbeaten streak.
Chico State slipped to 4-3-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the CCAA while Cal Poly Pomona moved to 7-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the CCAA. The Wildcats will host defending NCAA Champion Cal Stte LA Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Broncos broke the seal with a Mike Sedano's header from the PK spot on Sam Lena's nicely lofted pass from the top-right corner of the 18. Sedano placed the ball beautifully into the right upper-V.
After a tight first half in which the shots were even at five apiece prior to the go-ahead goal, the Broncos enjoyed the run of play for much of the second stanza. Cal Poly Pomona doubled its lead on a nice solo effort from Lena who beat a defender on the right flank and dribbled through the teeth of the defense to the top of the 18 before rolling a perfectly placed shot just off the fingertips of Wildcats goalkeeper Luis Albarran that snuck inside the far post.
