SAN BERNARDINO—A couple of wins would certainly make the Chico State men's soccer team's road to the postseason a little straighter. But for now, another tie on the road gets the Wildcats an important step closer. Chico State logged its sixth tie of the season and fourth of the scoreless variety Sunday in a 0-0 final at Cal State San Bernardino.
The Wildcats are now 6-3-6 overall and 3-1-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. They've lost just once in their past 11 contests, having gone 5-1-5 during that stretch. As a result, Chico State is in fifth place in the CCAA standings with 13 points.
The conference title is still in play with three contests remaining. Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona lead with way with 18 points apiece. Cal State LA and Cal State Monterey Bay are tied for third with 15 points each. Chico State is fifth with 13 points, Cal State San Marcos sixth with 11, Cal State East Bay seventh with nine points, and Cal State San Bernardino (now 5-3-6 overall and 1-3-4 in the CCAA) and Sonoma State tied for eighth with seven points. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the CCAA Tournament, which begins in exactly two weeks.
The Wildcats will wrap up the season against Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night at University Stadium, at home against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, and on the road at Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday, Oct. 27.
Sunday's match was played primarily in the middle third of the pitch. The teams combined for just five corner kicks. Cal State San Bernardino was credited with 11 shots and Chico State a season-low two. Wildcats goalkeeper Luis Albarran made a trio of saves for the team's seventh shutout of the season and third in its last four contests.
