Lock-down defense delivers Wildcats win

13th-ranked men’s basketball team beats rival Humboldt for 11th time in last 12 meetings

ARCATA—The Chico State men's basketball faced one of its oldest rivals with a brand-new name, Cal Poly Humboldt, Thursday night in Arcata. The results, and the Wildcats' lock-down defense on the Lumberjacks, remained the same. Chico State held Cal Poly Humboldt to one made bucket over the final five minutes and held on for a 66-58 victory in Lumberjack Arena. The Wildcats have now won 11 of the last 12 meetings in the rivalry, which began in 1933, and lead the all-time series 133-76.

Kevin Warren scored a game-high 20 points and back-court mate Isaiah Brooks bagged 19 as 13th-ranked Chico State improved to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal Poly Humboldt dropped to 10-7 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats will wrap up a four-game road stretch Saturday at Sonoma State before playing six of their final eight regular-season games at home. No fans are permitted at Saturday's game. Admission policies for Chico State's home games next week are likely to be announced on Monday.

Warren set the tone from the opening tip, scoring the first two baskets of the game and assisting on Chico State's third and fourth as they built an 8-3 advantage in what would become a wire-to-wire win. Warren made all five of his first half shots and had 14 points in the game's first 17 minutes as the Wildcats built a 14-point lead.

Malik Duffy, who finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, and two blocked shots, assisted on Brooks' 3-pointer early in the second stanza, and Brooks returned the favor on the Wildcats' next possession to make it a 15-point game. But playing in front of their home crowd, the Lumberjacks persisted, eventually cutting the lead to four with 5:15 to play. But in the end, they could not consistently overcome Chico State's stifling defense.

The Wildcats forced a shot clock violation on Humboldt's next possession and a wild shot at the shot clock buzzer on the one after that that Brooks corralled. In between those trips, on the other end, Brooks found Kelvin Wright Jr. for an uncontested slam as the shot clock expired. So, Chico State had the ball, up six, nearly a full two minutes after Humboldt had the ball with a chance to make it a one-possession game.

This time, as the shot clock ticked down, it was Warren who rose and scored in the lane to build the lead to eight. Warren and Brooks combined to make 5-of-6 free throws in the game's final minute to secure the victory.
