Wildcats make program history with win in Pomona

Second victory over Top-25 team in three days for 7-0 Chico State

POMONA—Even with all of the success it has enjoyed over the past decade, the Chico State men's basketball team had never swept the traditionally tough Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino road trip. Until now.

The Wildcats' 74-64 win at 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night followed Thursday's 99-90 victory at 11th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino. Head Coach Greg Clink questioned whether it might be the toughest road trip in the West Region during his postgame conversation with AM-1290 KPAY's Mike Baca. It might be the toughest road trip in the nation.

Of course, before the interview was over, Clink started talking about the Wildcats' next big game, Saturday night at home against rival Sonoma State.

Off to the program's best start since the 1942-43 campaign, and third best start ever, the Wildcats will be attempting to improve to 8-0. They will also be looking to make more history by way of their national ranking. Chico State entered this weekend ranked No. 6 in the D2SIDA Media Poll—the team's highest national ranking ever—and No. 8 in the NABC (coaches) Poll.

The Wildcats are now 5-0 away from home and 3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

They used a 9-0 run midway through the first half—an Evan Oliver layup set up by Kaleb Carter's steal and assist; Kevin Warren's 3-pointer; and Brennan Wheeler's three-point play—to wrestle the lead away from the Broncos for good. Wheeler's triple inside the final minute of the half gave the Wildcats their biggest lead of the half, 36-23. The advantage fluctuated between 8 and 15 throughout the entire second half.

Joshua Hamilton's 20 points led the Wildcats and matched his career high. Malik Duffy finished with 14 points, Kevin Warren nine, and Kelvin Wright, Jr. and Isaiah Brooks eight apiece. Warren also grabbed seven boards and Wright, Jr. chipped in eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.
