Postseason hopes hinge on Thursday’s results

Wildcats fall at Cal Poly Pomona on a pair of PKs

POMONA—Two penalty kicks proved to be the difference as the Chico State men's soccer team fell to second-place Cal Poly Pomona 2-0 Sunday at Kellogg Stadium on the campus of CPP. The match was scoreless until Wildcats goalkeeper Luis Albarran was whistled for taking a man down in the box in the 58th minute, leading to the first PK. Less than five minutes later, Benjamin Ralph was whistled for a hand ball. The referee originally pointed to a spot just outside of the box, but after consulting with the assistant referee, awarded a PK.

Chico State slipped to 5-11-0 overall and 4-6-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and will need to beat Humboldt State in Thursday's season finale at 11:30 a.m. at University Soccer Stadium to have a chance to advance to the CCAA Tournament. Just how much help the Wildcats will need from other teams, if any at all, depends on the results of Sunday afternoon's matches.

Cal Poly Pomona improved to 11-2-3 overall and 8-0-2 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats are in seventh place following the morning matches with eighth-place Cal State San Marcos and ninth-place Cal State Monterey Bay still to play.

Albarran finished with a season-high eight saves for the Wildcats, who were out-shot by the high-powered Broncos 19-7. Jacob Chong registered two shots on goal and Liam Duerksen and Kristoffer Brown had one apiece.
