SEASIDE—Tyler Ashman played the best round of his collegiate career and Chris Colla kept playing some of the West Region's best golf as the Chico State men's golf team finished tied for third at the Otter Invitational at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside Tuesday.
Ashman posted two eagles on the way to a 67 and Colla carded a nice round of 69 during a push for medalist honors. Colla wound up with a solo second-place finish at 1-over par and Ashman made it two Wildcats in the top 10 with a tie for eighth at +6.
Chico State's team flirted with the lead for much of the day but wound up four shots back of Cal State San Bernardino (+25). Colorado-Colorado Springs placed second at +26, and Chico State and tournament host Cal State Monterey Bay tied for third at +29.
The Wildcats' round of 292 tied Cal State Monterey Bay for the low score of the day.
The tournament marked the final competition of the fall for the Wildcats, who posted a win at the Western Washington Invitational, two thirds, and a fifth-place finish. They'll resume their 2021-22 campaign on February 14 at the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Course in Vista.
That will be the first of five events over a two-month spanning leading into the postseason, which will begin with the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, which Chico State is co-hosting at Yocha Dehe Golf Course in Brooks.
