Wildcats win behind balanced scoring and Briggs’ presence inside

Big man ties Chico State’s career blocked shots record with four rejections

SEASIDE—All five Chico State starters scored in double figures and Justin Briggs added 13 rebounds and four blocked shots, the fourth of which tied him with Jordan Semple for the program's career blocked-shots record, as the 18th-ranked Wildcats rolled to an 81-71 win at Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday afternoon.

Malik Duffy and Isaiah Brooks led the way with 18 points apiece, while Calvin Geraci and Kevin Warren scored 13 apiece and Briggs chipped in 12.

Chico State improved to 16-4 overall and 11-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with its 10th win in its last 11 games. The Wildcats also improved to 6-1 in conference road games and 8-1 in true road games this season.

Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 7-14 overall and 4-11 in the CCAA.

Briggs fourth block of the night, with 2:22 to play Saturday, was the 153rd of his collegiate career. His next one will make him Chico State's all-time leader in blocks. Briggs already holds the program's single-season record of 66, set during the 2016–17 campaign. He has rejected 31 shots this season. Saturday marked the 10th time this season the senior from West Sacramento (River City HS) has blocked two or more in a game.

The Wildcats, who next host first-place UC San Diego (ranked No. 4 in the nation) Thursday night at Acker Gym, grabbed the lead a little more than four minutes into Saturday's game and never relinquished it.

They built the lead to 47-32 with a 17-6 run during a five-minute stretch late in the first half.

The lead dipped below double digits just once, with 19:48 to play. But the Wildcats responded and twice led by as many as 18.

Duffy hit 8-of-9 shots, Brooks 4-of-8 threes and Warren 10-of-12 free throws as Chico State's offense rolled throughout the game.

Thursday night's game is scheduled to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. After that, the Wildcats will host Cal State San Marcos Saturday at 7:30.
