In the midst of the Chico State men's basketball team's January swoon, Head Coach Greg Clink remarked that he wasn't so concerned about the team's won-loss record for the remainder of the season. He just wanted to see continual improvement throughout the remainder of the season.
Â
That improvement has come, and along with it four wins in the last five games.
Â
That run of success has brought with it hope that the Wildcats might earn a top-eight finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings, and with it, a berth in the CCAA Tournament.
Â
The Wildcats, 9-10 overall and 8-10 in the CCAA, are currently in ninth place, on the outside looking in. They control much of their own postseason destiny, however, with three of the five teams they can still catch on the schedule over their final four games of the regular season.
Â
Up first are road games against eighth-place Cal State LA (14-11, 10-9 CCAA) Thursday night, and Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-11, 10-8 CCAA), which is currently in a tie for sixth, Saturday.
Â
The following week, the Wildcats will be back home to face fourth-place San Francisco State (15-8, 11-7 CCAA) Thursday and 11
th-place Sonoma State (8-14, 6-12) Saturday.
Â
All four games are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. Mike Baca will be courtside to provide the play-by-play, broadcast locally on Newstalk 1290-AM and 102.9 FM KPAY, and simulcast via links found on the top-right corner of this story, on the men's basketball schedule page, and in the calendar section on the homepage.Â
The Wildcats will be out for some revenge Thursday against Cal State LA, which rallied from 22 points down to force overtime on January 12 in Chico, eventually winning 92-90.
Â
The tables will be turned on Saturday. Chico State beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 87-67 on January 10 in Acker Gym behind Isaiah Brooks' 18-point, 7-rebound, 7-assist performance and a then-season-high team shooting percentage of 53%.
Â
Brooks, a sophomore, leads the CCAA and ranks eighth in the nation with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.4.
Â
Last season, the Wildcats went on the road to Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA and came back home with a pair of victories, a feat only Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino have been able to pull off in 2018-19.
Â
However, that is likely what it will take if the Wildcats want to be playing for a CCAA Tournament berth during the final week of the regular season.
