The most successful decade in the history of the Chico State men's basketball program will come to close Saturday when Humboldt State comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at Acker Gym. The Wildcats would love to use the game as a springboard into an even better decade, beginning with a strong finish to 2019–20.
With one game remaining to play in the 2010s, Chico State has compiled a record of 200-100, nine postseason berths, six NCAA Championship Tournament berths, six NCAA Championship Tournament victories, three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) crowns, and a pair of NCAA Championship Tournament West Region titles.
This year, the Wildcats are 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA, having won six of their last seven and five of six at home.
Humboldt State is 6-5 overall and 2-4 in the CCAA.
Fans who can't make it to Acker Gym can hear the action on KPAY 93.9 FM. They can also hear or watch the game online or follow live stats via links at the top of this page, on the men's basketball schedule page, and in the calendar section on the homepage. The women's game kicks off the festivities at 5:30.
The Chico State-Humboldt State rivalry dates back to 1933. They'll be playing for the 206
th time on Saturday. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 129-76.
Since dropping their first four games of this decade against the Lumberjacks, the Wildcats have won 13 of the last 18 meetings, including seven of eight overall. In Acker Gym, the Wildcats have won their last four against Humboldt State and seven of the last eight.
Much of Chico State's success over the past 10 seasons can be traced to its defensive prowess and dominance on the boards. That is once again the case. The Wildcats currently rank 16
th in the nation in rebounding margin at plus-9.0 per game and 22
nd in scoring defense (66.3 points per game). They are second in the CCAA in both categories.
But there's one area in which they've improved dramatically: 3-point shooting. Chico State's .425-shooting percentage from beyond the arc ranks sixth in the nation (fourth among teams with at least 100 makes) and leads the CCAA. The school record, set in 1983–84 when the Wildcats knocked down 81-of-192 attempts, is .422.
Chico State's team field-goal percentage of .495 ranks third in the CCAA and 34
th in the nation. That marks the highest shooting percentage for the Wildcats since they joined the CCAA. The school record, set in 1983–84, is .512.
Following Saturday's game, the Wildcats are off until January second when they begin a three-game road swing with a game at Cal State L.A.
