Three games remain in the 2019 calendar year for the Chico State men's basketball team. If the Wildcats have their way, they will enter 2020 among the favorites to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title, a feat the team has accomplished three times in the past eight seasons. But Head Coach Greg Clink will tell anyone who will listen that today is the only one that matters right now.
Thursday, the only thing Clink expects his team to be focused on is playing well against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay. That game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Acker Gym. Then the Wildcats will switch their focus to Sonoma State, which Chico State will play on the road Saturday at 3 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
Both games will be broadcast locally on FM 93.9 KPAY. Links to streaming audio, streaming video, and live stats are available on the top-right corner of this release, on the men's basketball schedule page, and in the calendar section of the homepage.
The Wildcats will host Humboldt State on December 21 before opening the new year at Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills January 2–4.
Chico State, 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA, had won four in a row (including a road with at 4
th-ranked UC San Diego) before clipping a hurdle at home against Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night.
The Wildcats hope to regain their momentum Thursday against Cal State Monterey Bay, which enters the game with a record of 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA. Sonoma State is 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA.
Chico State center Justin Briggs opens this week's slate on the brink of breaking into the program's career top 10 in rebounds. The senior is currently tied with Rich Hogan for 11
th all time with 545 and needs 11 more to match Roderick Hawkins for 10
th. Briggs already ranks second in blocked shots with 134 and needs 19 more to match Jordan Semple's school record. His .562 career field-goal percentage is fifth in school history.
The Wildcats have won four straight at home against the Otters, and prior to last season's 81-74 loss in Seaside, had won seven in a row overall in the series. Chico State leads the all-time series, which dates back to the 2004–05 season, 17-10.
Chico State is 51-44 all time against Sonoma State, a rivalry that began in 1967. The Seawolves won last season's finale 98-88, but before that, the Wildcats had won five in a row at home against the Seawolves. They are 7-3 against the Seawolves at Acker Gym in the Greg Clink era.
