Box Score TUCSON, Arizona—The Chico State men's basketball team gave the University of Arizona all it wanted in Friday's exhibition game, and the Division II Wildcats got everything they wanted from their much-anticipated matchup with the Pac-12 Wildcats in front of 12,605 at the McKale Center. Chico State lost 74-65, but led at the half and still led as late as 5:15 into the second half.
Big man Justin Briggs led Chico State with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocked shots. Calvin Geraci contributed 14 points, knocking down 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and redshirt freshman Joshua Hamilton chipped in 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Point guard Isaiah Brooks dished out a game-high seven assists.
Chico State wraps up its exhibition season with a record of 1-1. The Wildcats beat Arizona Christian 84-74 Wednesday night in Glendale, but played much better Friday, specifically on the defensive end. They held the Division I Wildcats to 42-percent shooting and forced 12 turnovers.
Chico State opens the regular season next weekend at the Seattle Pacific Sodexo Classic and will face two tough customers. Friday night's opponent, Seattle Pacific, opens the season ranked No. 3 in the D2SIDA Men's Basketball West Regional Poll and has been picked to finish second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference by the conference's coaches. Saturday night's opponent, Azusa Pacific, is picked to finish second in the Pacific West Conference and is ranked No. 5 in the West.
