Just when it looked like the Chico State men's basketball team was ready to roll to another home victory, Cal State LA came roaring back to win 92-90 in overtime, snapping the Wildcats' 11-game winning streak at Acker Gym Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles sent the game into overtime when Ja'Sean Lewis rebounded Devin Means' missed 3-pointer and dished to Jordan Rogers for the tying layup with 0.7 seconds left.
Means got a second chance at the game winner in overtime and didn't miss, kissing a short jumper from the left block high off the glass with 2.1 seconds to play. Kevin Warren's desperation shot from beyond half court came up short at the buzzer.
Means finished with 27 points, 23 of which came in the second half and overtime, as Cal State LA improved to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Chico State slipped to 5-6 overall and 4-6 in the CCAA despite Isaiah Brooks' 15 points and 11 assists. The 11 assists match the most by a Wildcat in the Greg Clink era. Junior Russell also had 11 in Clink's first season on Jan. 10, 2009. Justin Argenal and Jay Flores, the only other Wildcats to reach double-figures in assists since, each had a game with 10.
Sophomore Calvin Geraci contributed 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Nate Ambrosini and Malik Duffy scored 16 points apiece to lead the Wildcats, while Calvin Geraci and Kevin Warren added 12 and 11, respectively.
The Wildcats had not allowed an opponent to score 90 against them since Greg Clink's fourth game as Chico State's head coach, a 94-84 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside on Nov. 22, 2008, at Western Oregon University.
Chico State allowed 90-plus six times in the season prior to Clink's arrival. The sixth time came against Cal State LA on Feb. 28, 2008, which also marks the last time an opponent broke the 90-point barrier in Chico.
Defense has been the program's calling card ever since. But the Wildcats' defense betrayed them in the late stages Saturday.
Chico State led 57-35 with just over 14 minutes to play. Over the next 5:05, Cal State LA put together a 21-3 run to pull within striking distance.
The same Golden Eagles who scored just 25 points in the first half, would go on to score 67 over the game's final 25 minutes.
Their comeback was complete when Means tied the game at 76 with a 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining. Brooks briefly reclaimed the lead for the 'Cats with a layup with 23 ticks on the clock before Rogers' bucket sent it into overtime.
The lead changed hands four times in the extra period. Two Ambrosini free throws opened the scoring and two Brooks free throws made it 85-84 with 3:03 to play.
Marvin Timothy briefly tied the game at 87-apiece with a ferocious dunk with 1:49 to play. But he was called for a technical foul in the immediate aftermath and Means made one of two free throws.
After a Wildcats turnover, Cal State LA got back-to-back offensive rebounds, the second a tip-in by Lewis, to stretch the lead to three before Spencer LaShells was fouled during his own tip-in on the other end. The sophomore sank the free throw to tie the game with 28 seconds remaining, setting the scene for Means' game-winner.
Chico State had won nine of its 11 straight at home by double-digits. They entered Saturday night's game 3-0 at home in 2018–19, having outscored their opponents by an average of 20.3 points.
The Wildcats are back in action Thursday night at Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 and Mike Baca will be courtside to provide the play-by-play, broadcast locally on Newstalk 1290-AM and 102.9 FM KPAY, and simulcast on the Internet via www.chicowildcats.com.
