Wildcats settle for draw in final CCAA tuneup

Egujie notches second brace of the season with two first-half goals

The Chico State men's soccer team's first road match of the season was a wild one Saturday night in Fresno. The Wildcats twice took the lead on Jeremiah Egujie goals in the opening half, but surrendered the equalizer each time before settling for a 2-2 tie at Fresno Pacific.

The host Sunbirds played a man down for the final six minutes of regulation before Egujie was sent off at the end regulation, leaving each team with 10 players for overtime.

Chico State twice threatened to end the match in the opening 10 minutes of sudden victory, but Alex Fluitt's shot hit the crossbar in the 93rd minute, and DiAngelo Gleaves had his potential match winner saved off the line by a Sunbirds defender in the 100th minute.

The Wildcats will enter conference play next weekend with a record of 2-1-1. Fresno Pacific, picked by the coaches of the PacWest Conference to finish fourth this season and coming off a season-opening 2-1 victory over 4th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, is now 1-0-1.

The Wildcats opened the scoring just 1:09 into the match. Justin Bethke set up Egujie with an angled pass toward the top-right corner of the box, and Egujie's shot back across the flow of the defense found the back of the net.

The Sundbirds equalized in the 26th minute. Preseason PacWest Player of the Year Anthony Velarde's free kick took a deflection off a Chico State defender and in.

Chico State reclaimed the lead just 1:38 later. Eddie Zecena connected with Egujie on a long pass in behind the Sunbirds defense leaving Egujie only the keeper to beat. He did, notching his fourth goal of the season.

Fresno Pacific finished the night's scoring in the 42nd minute, again taking advantage of a deflected shot. This time a quick pass and blast from 10 yards out evened the score.

The Wildcats will open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at home next Friday against Cal State L.A. at 7 p.m. They'll face Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday at 2 p.m.
