SAN BERNARDINO—The Chico State men's soccer team headed into Friday's match at Cal State San Bernardino riding a three-match winning streak. But most of the Wildcats' fans were hoping just to get a point against the Coyotes, who were one of the hottest teams in the land.
They got much more. Garrett Hogbin tied the match on a penalty kick after he was fouled in the 66
th minute and Jeremiah Egujie scored a brilliant goal on a counter attack with just 1:32 remaining in regulation to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory and snap the Coyotes' five-match home winning streak.
Chico State improved to 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the win and now sits along in second place in the conference standings. Cal State San Bernardino slipped to 5-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the CCAA.
Now 3-0-1 on the road this season, the Wildcats will head a few miles West to face Cal Poly Pomona Sunday before returning home to start a regular-season-ending stretch of five home matches in their final seven.
Defender Garrett Hogbin drew a foul in the box and then buried the
penalty to tie the match.
Cal State San Bernardino opened the scoring in the 63
rd minute, capitalizing on one of five corner kick opportunities.
But the Wildcats were right back in it three minutes later. They were also trying to convert on a corner kick when Hogbin beat his defender, but he was hammered from behind and the referee pointed to the spot.
Hogbin hit it purely for his second goal in the last three matches and the third of his career.
Despite the ticking of the clock toward 90, the match did not seem likely to end without another strike. Going for the win, the Coyotes were pushing numbers forward. Chico State, meanwhile, was creating some strong opportunities on the counter attack.
They broke through on one of those counters. And it happened in a flash.
Wildcats goalkeeper Damion Lewis, who made two big second-half saves to keep the match tied, collected a ball and quickly punted a line drive down the pitch. Chico State midfielder Alex Fluitt got to the sidewinder in time to flick it on into the box for Egujie, who got to it out in front of the defense, took a touch, and hit a blast to the far post from the top corner of the six-yard box for the match winner and his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Lewis made four saves in what was a very impressive defensive effort for the Wildcats. Cal State San Bernardino entered the match averaging a CCAA-best 2.43 goals per match and had scored 16 times in five previous home tilts.
