Emigh earns CCAA Championship Scholar Award

Honor goes championships site participant with highest GPA

LA JOLLA—Sarah Emigh had no idea what was going on. The moment was thick with irony. She had just been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship Scholar because she almost always knows exactly what is going on.

Emigh was just coming off the pitch following warmups for Friday's CCAA Tournament semifinal match when the announcement came. Thanks to an unfortunate combination of low public-address volume and winds conspiring against the sound, the sophomore pre-nursing major could not hear what was being said.

However, a few points and nudges made it clear she was to walk to midfield.

"I didn't know what was happening," Emigh said. "I just knew I was supposed to walk out there."

She figured it out when she looked down and read her plaque.

The CCAA Championship Scholar honor goes to the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average among teams participating teams at the championship site. In this case, there were four.

"I have to thank my coach and my parents for always drilling into me to get good grades," Emigh said. "To see the hard work being honored is really cool."

It's been quite a week for Emigh, who was named First Team All-CCAA by the conference's coaches Thursday.

She is the third Wildcat to win the award, which debuted in 2017-18. Volleyball player Bekah Boyle and cross country athlete Caton Avilla won it in their respective sports last season.

"Sarah's performance in my American Government class has been remarkable," wrote professor Eileen Morris. "It is a pleasure to be part of her educational program."
