Chico State still hoping for NCAA Tournament bid

LA JOLLA—The agony of defeat is real, and the Chico State men's soccer team felt its full force Friday night in a 1-0 loss to Cal State LA in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

Chico State goalkeeper Damion Lewis made his second penalty kick save of the night with just 26 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, but the 25th-ranked Golden Eagles scored on the rebound to win in the 110thminute of the match.

Had the clock run out, the game would have gone down as a scoreless draw (and Lewis' school-record breaking 24thcareer shutout) and the advancing team decided in a penalty kick shootout. Instead, the loss puts Chico State squarely on the bubble for an NCAA Championship Tournament berth.

The Wildcats will learn if their season will continue when the NCAA Championship selection announcement takes place Monday at 3 p.m.

"Hell of a game," said Chico State Head Coach Felipe Restrepo. "This game is cruel in moments. Tough with 26 seconds to give up a penalty. But we hope that on Monday the committee's favorable."

Chico State is now 13-5-1. Cal State LA, which beat the Wildcats 1-0 twice this season, improved top 13-2-3.

Lewis finished with five saves, two on penalties and in the first overtime that had both benches gasping in awe.

Coby Cueva also had a memorable night. The 2017 All-CCAA defender came on in relief of the injured Ryan Caro, playing 68 minutes and helping the Wildcats keep a very talented Golden Eagles offense off the board until the final seconds.

Cal State LA limited Chico State to a season-low four shots. The Wildcats' best chance came on Alex Fluitt's rocket from 18 yards in the first overtime. The ball sailed just wide.
