’Cats bag third straight clean sheet at home

Hirsch’s first goal of the season proves to be the match winner

The Chico State capped off a three-match homestand with its third consecutive shutout victory Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium. The Wildcats held visiting Humboldt State to one shot on goal in a 2-0 victory.

Michael Hirsch scored in the 37th minute and Jeremiah Egujie doubled the lead 3:31 into the second half as the Wildcats improved to 9-3-1 overall and 6-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with their seventh win in their last eight matches.

Wildcats goalkeeper Damion Lewis made the save, diving to his right to punch a dangerous chance wide late in the second half, in recording his sixth shutout of the season.

Eddie Zecena's corner kick set up the first goal. It was headed by Justin Bethke at the far post but deflected out front by Lumberjacks goalkeeper Bryan Hernandez. Ronan McEnroe got a piece of the

deflection, sending it back on goal. Hernandez dove to re-direct McEnroe's shot, but Hirsch pounced on the loose ball in the mouth of the goal and pounded into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The assist was McEnroe's first of the season.

Chico State doubled its lead a little more than three minutes into the second half. On a throw-in from just above the corner flag, Joshua Belda connected with Egujie on a throw in near the corner flag. Egujie snuck around his defender to take the pass just outside the top left corner of the six-yard box. He spun to his right around the first defender, cut back inside to beat a second, and then unleashed a blast from close range up and over the right leg of the keeper for his eighth goal of the season and the 18th of his career. The assist was Belda's first of the campaign.

The Wildcats will be back in action Wednesday when they hit the road to face Stanislaus State at 7 p.m. They will be at San Francisco State Sunday before returning home for their final two matches of the regular season.
