Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Luke Reid - Sports Information Director (lreid@csuchico.edu)

Historic win for Wildcats, McFerren

Senior point guard the first player in the history of the program with career totals of at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists, and 100 steals

The Chico State men's basketball team accomplished two things for the first time in more than 40 years Saturday night in ripping rival Humboldt State 74–36. The Wildcats' margin of victory was its largest against the Lumberjacks since the 1973-74 season. And Humboldt State's point total was its lowest against the Wildcats since the 1949-50 campaign.

Jalen McFerren went one better. The senior point guard did something no Wildcat has ever done.

With his second basket Saturday, a twisting left-handed layup that gave Chico State a 7–0 lead with 16:11 to go in the first half, McFerren became the 19th player in the program's history to reach 1,000 career points, and the first Wildcat with career totals of at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists, and 100 steals.

Corey Silverstrom scored 10 points and piled up season highs with 7
rebounds and 7 assists.
McFerren finished with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a steal in just 28 minutes of action. Corey Silverstrom scored 10 points and chipped in season-highs of seven assists and seven rebounds. Isaiah Ellis also grabbed seven rebounds to leapfrog Ben Perak and Jeff Carter into 10th on Chico State's career rebounding list with 543.

McFerren, Ellis and Silverstrom are now the first trio of teammates in the program's history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in the same season.

Marvin Timothy (nine points and eight rebounds) and freshman Josh Lavergne (eight points and six rebounds) also had strong all-around games for the Wildcats, who won their third straight to improve to 12-5 overall and 9-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The Wildcats held Humboldt State to just 18-percent shooting. After making six shots in the first half, the Lumberjacks made only five in the second, and finished 11-for-60 from the field in sinking to 6-13 overall and 3-10 in the CCAA.

Chico State has now won six in a row in the rivalry, which dates back to 1933, and holds a 128–75 edge all-time.

Sparked by McFerren's hot start, the Wildcats scored the game's first nine points and led wire to wire. He hit a 3-pointer on Chico State's first possession and also had the layup that got him to 1,000 points, a steal, and an assist during the run.

Nate Ambrosini and McFerren sandwiched a Silverstrom basket with triples late in the half to help the Wildcats build a 34–18 lead at the break.

A 10–0 Chico State run coming out of the break pushed the lead (which would grow as large as 41 later) to 44–18.

Chico State, which remains in fourth place in the CCAA, will hit the road to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA next Friday and Saturday night before returning home to play four of its next five.
