’Cats face high-scoring San Marcos in penultimate home game

Hoping to take one step closer to first undefeated home campaign

The Chico State men's basketball team is on the cusp of a historic home campaign, and time is running out to see the Wildcats play in Acker Gym.

Chico State, 12-0 at home this season, hosts Cal State San Marcos Saturday night at 7:30 in its penultimate regular-season home game.

No Chico State men's basketball team on record has put together an undefeated season at home. In fact, the 2011-12 team that went 14-2 in Acker Gym and the 1991-92 that went 16-2 are the teams that came closest on record.

But these Wildcats are more focused on the present than the past. At 18-5 overall and 11-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the two-time defending CCAA Champion Wildcats are one game out of first in the CCAA standings with five to play. They are also in the hunt for their sixth straight NCAA Championship Tournament bid.

Cal State San Marcos is 14-8 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA. The Cougars lead the conference in scoring offense at 80.6 points per game and boast the conference's leading scorer in Ethan Alvano (17 ppg).

Chico State held the Cougars to their fourth-lowest scoring output and third-lowest number of made 3-pointers and field-goal percentage of the season in its 80–68 victory in San Marcos back on Dec. 3.

Isaiah Ellis scored 21 points and Corey Silverstrom had 17 to lead Chico State. The Wildcats buried 11 three-pointers, including daggers by Robert Duncan and Silverstrom in the game's final three minutes. They were two of the five Wildcats who hit two 3-pointers apiece. Ellis, Michael Bethea, Jr., and Jalen McFerren were the others.

Every Chico State basketball game this season will be broadcast locally on Newstalk 1290 KPAY-AM. Links to streaming audio, video and live stats are available in the calendar section on the ChicoWildcats.com homepage and on the men's basketball schedule page.
