’Cats collect 4th straight 20-win season on Senior Night

Duncan, Bethea shine as Wildcats roll past Stanislaus State

Those who follow Chico State men's basketball closely know that Head Coach Greg Clink seldom relaxes before the final buzzer sounds. But this was Senior Night.

Clink recognized the moment in the final minute of the Wildcats' 63–47 victory against Stanislaus State and made sure the fans had a chance to show their appreciation for the teams two seniors, Robert Duncan and Michael Bethea, Jr.

Clink sent Bethea to the scorers' table to sub out Duncan, the team's lone four-year player, and Duncan railed a 3-pointer just before exiting to a standing ovation from the 1,425 in attendance. Clink called timeout moments later afford Bethea the same treatment.

Both Duncan and Bethea waved to the crowd as they left the court and walked into the embrace of their fiery, yet kindhearted coach.

Duncan led the Wildcats with 18 points and Bethea chipped in eight points and three rebounds in his first start of the season.

The Wildcats' 20th win of the season helped to set a new program standard. They reached 20 wins for the fourth season in a row for the first time in the 100-plus year history of the program.

Chico State is now 20-6 overall and 13-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Stanislaus State slipped to 6-19 and 3-15 in the CCAA.

Jalen McFerren knocked down 3-of-4 threes and finished with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists. Isaiah Ellis had 11 points and eight rebounds. Justin Briggs finished with six points, 10 rebounds, five blocked shots, and a career-high three steals.

Chico State fans will have one more opportunity to see the Wildcats in Acker Gym this season, where they are 13-1. They will host a first-round game in the Conference Tournament on Feb. 28.

Prior to that, they'll wrap up the regular season on the road at Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay this Friday and Saturday.

Duncan and Bethea took different roads to tonight's Senior Ceremony.

Bethea's trip was a winding one. Hailing from Staten Island, New York, he played for two seasons at Ohlone Junior College before transferring to Grambling State University, and then to Chico State. But in his one season here, Bethea has made a huge impact. One of the first players off the bench in Greg Clink's rotation, Bethea has provided great energy and ranks fifth on the team in steals and sixth in scoring. 28464But it is his humble, team-first attitude that has endeared him most to the Wildcat faithful. Bethea plans to graduate this summer with a degree in criminal justice.

The CCAA Player of the Year and an All-America selection last season, Duncan has grown up a Wildcat. The product of Granite Bay High School played just 29 total minutes as a freshman. He will graduate this spring with a degree in Business Administration as one of only two players in program history with career totals eclipsing 1,000 points, 200 assists, and 100 steals.

Duncan has been part of three straight NCAA Championship Tournament teams, back-to-back CCAA Championships, and the program's first NCAA Championship West Regional title.

He ranks fourth in program history in career steals with 138. He had three on Saturday to pass a fellow CCAA Player of the Year, Jay Flores. Duncan also ranks eighth in assists, and needs just 26 more points to break into the top 10 in scoring.

The Wildcats are 90-29 with Duncan in the fold.
