With title on the line, Wildcats fall in OT

Get chance at revenge Tuesday in opening round of CCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES—Pressing for a victory that would have netted it the 2017 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) crown, instead the Chico State men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1–0 overtime loss at Cal State LA Saturday.

The Golden Eagles, needing a win to advance to the postseason, scored in the 96th minute. The golden goal came after the Wildcats had peppered Cal State LA with six shots over the final 16 minutes of the match, including five that Golden Eagles goalkeeper Steven Barrera was forced to save.

The Wildcats won't have to wait long to get a chance at revenge. Seeded No. 4 in the CCAA Tournament, they'll host No. 5-seeded Cal State LA in an opening-round match Tuesday at 4 p.m. at University Soccer Stadium.

Chico State slipped to 10-5-2 overall and finished 8-2-2 in conference play with its first road loss of the season. Cal State LA improved to 12-4-2 overall and wrapped up CCAA play with a 6-4-2 mark.

Wildcats goalkeeper Damion Lewis matched the career high he set Thursday with nine saves. But Julian Zamora's shot after a cheeky give-and-go with Rigoberto Maciel found the netting inside the far post 5:14 into the first overtime period to send the Golden Eagles to the playoffs.

Chico State finished the match with a 19–14 edge in shots.

Barrera was at his best in the first half, when he made three spectacular stops from point-blank range, including a pair back-to-back from Donta'e Garcia and Andrew McCombs in the 37th minute. Lewis made a big stop on Zamora in the first half to keep the Golden Eagles off the board.

Tim Klefisch had an outstanding chance in the second half that Lewis made a diving stop to keep out of the net and Lewis made another big save on Zamora in the 78th minute for the Wildcats.

Barrera made a big stop on a bid by Christian Roman with five minutes left that led to a corner kick and Cal State LA's defense stood tall and the game went into overtime.
