’Cats climb back in it, but fall in double-OT

Chico State’s CCAA unbeaten streak stopped at 11 despite Arceta’s first collegiate brace

True freshman Eruvey Arceta scored a first-half brace as the Chico State men's soccer team roared back from an early two-goal deficit to tie the match. And it looked as if Arceta had delivered the winning pass on a gorgeous ball to Jeremiah Egujie in the closing minutes of regulation.

However, it was not meant to be. The goal was wiped off the board, a foul called, and Cal Poly Pomona scored the golden goal 1:51 into the second overtime. The Wildcats' conference winning streak ended at 11 matches with a 3–2 defeat.

Despite Arceta's first collegiate brace (and second and third collegiate goals), the Wildcats dipped to 7-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 11-3-0 overall and 7-2-0 in the CCAA.

Arceta's clever ball over the top started a Chico State counter that, at least on the scoreboard, gave the Wildcats the momentary lead with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Egujie got by a defender and put the ball in the back, sending the crowd into a frenzy. But the linesman signaled the referee over, and after the two conferred, the goal was wiped away and a foul called on Egujie.

The Broncos remained in a tie atop the CCAA table when Jeremy Totays whipped a ball to the top right corner of the six-yard box and Matthew Perez guided it inside the right post with a header in the 102nd minute.

Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a quick 2–0 lead on goals from Jamie Villalobos in the 12th minute and Luis Najera, Jr., in the 18th.

The Wildcats drew even by the end of the half. Arceta toed home his first goal after Donta'e Garcia directed Egujie's pass to the far post back across the mouth of the goal in the 21st minute.

With 1:02 remaining before intermission Andrew McCombs cracked a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was handled by a Broncos defender. Arceta stuck the PK into the upper-V to tie the match at two.

McCombs nearly gave the Wildcats the lead seconds later, but his try clanged off the crossbar.

The Wildcats are back in action Sunday when they host Cal State San Bernardino at 11:30 a.m.
