OT, or not OT, that is the question

Wildcats look to continue recent dominance against San Bernardino

The Chico State men's basketball team is playing only one game this week–Friday night at 7:30 at Cal State San Bernardino. But it might be wise for the Wildcats to prepare to play more than 40 minutes.

Four of the last five times the Wildcats and Coyotes have met–including the last three–the game has gone overtime.

Chico State won all five, helping to switch the momentum in a series that was once completely dominated by Cal State San Bernardino. After losing 24 of their first 30 meetings with the Coyotes, the Wildcats have won 10 of the last 11, including five in a row.

The Wildcats, 12-2, enter the game riding a six-game win streak. At 5-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action, they are in second place, one game behind UC San Diego.

The Wildcats rank second in the nation in scoring defense, sixth in blocked shots, and 11th in scoring margin.

Individually, redshirt freshman Justin Briggs leads the CCAA and ranks fifth in the country with 32 blocked shots. Robert Duncan is second in the CCAA and seventh in the nation with 32 steals.

Briggs is one block shy of moving into the program's single-season top 10, needs 10 more to crack the top five, and is 30 away from Richard Ross' record of 62.

Duncan is also moving up some impressive lists. He's 28 points shy of 1,000 in his career, a milestone only 15 Wildcats have reached before him. With 226 career assists, he needs seven more to tie Chico White (1979-82) for 10th in school history.

Isaiah Ellis is also primed to crack into the career top 10 in blocked shots. With 48 thus far, he needs only one more to match Jason Van Eck (2001-05) for 10th.

Cal State San Bernardino, which will be playing at home for just the second time this season on Friday, is 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA. The Coyotes, picked to finish fifth in the CCAA's preseason coaches' poll, are coming off consecutive losing seasons for the first time since the 1989-90, 1990-91 campaigns.

The last five Chico State-Cal State San Bernardino matchups:
Feb. 13, 2016: Chico State 91, Cal State San Bernardino 79 (OT)
Corey Silverstrom scored 25 points in regulation and dished out five assists in overtime in the Wildcats' 91–79 victory last season in San Bernardino.

Jan. 10, 2015: Chico State 75, Cal State San Bernardino 73 (OT)
Two seasons ago in Coussoulis Arena, the Wildcats rallied from 14 points down in the second half to force overtime, and then Mike Rosaroso buried the game-winning 3-pointer with one-tenth of a second remaining.

Feb. 12, 2015: Chico State 73, Cal State San Bernardino 72 (OT)
Just a month earlier, Rosaroso was the hero in another overtime victory against the Coyotes, hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:49 left and then making two crucial free throws in the closing seconds. Robert Duncan had 22 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

March 15, 2014: Chico State 94, Cal State San Bernardino 77
The only one of the last five meetings that did not go beyond 40 minutes was one of the biggest wins in the history of Chico State's program, propelling them into the West Region Championship game of the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Wildcats shot 67 percent as Amir Carraway, Rashad Parker, and Jordan Semple scored 21 points apiece.

Feb. 8, 2014: Chico State 86, Cal State San Bernardino 82 (OT)
Carraway, Semple, and Parker combined for 63 points in the Wildcats' win. Carraway made three free throws with 10 seconds left to force overtime and hit a 3-pointer on the team's first overtime possession to give Chico State the lead for good. Parker secured the win by hitting six straight free throws down the stretch.
