There's nothing like good ol' fashioned home cookin' – just ask the Chico State volleyball team. The Wildcats have played near flawless ball so far this season in the friendly confines of Acker Gym, and have yet to lose a set on their home floor. The Wildcat faithful went home happy again Friday night, as the 'Cats needed just three sets to dispose of visiting Cal Poly Pomona 25-12, 25-22, 25-23.
Friday's win moves Chico State to 9-4 on the season and into a tie with Humboldt State for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division with a 3-1 conference mark. Cal Poly Pomona dropped its fifth straight decision to slip to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA South Division.
Olivia Mediano led the Wildcat offense with 11 kills on the night while adding two service aces and a pair of blocks. Camryn Rocha added nine kills and had a hand in three blocks, with Kim Wright contributing seven kills, two aces and four blocks. Torey Thompson doled out 30 assists and posted 14 digs, while Shannon Cotton led all 'Cats with 16 digs.
It was all Chico State in the opening set, with the Wildcats using kills by Mediano, Wright and Anna Baytosh to roar out to a 10-3 lead. Pomona pulled to within 13-6, only to see the 'Cats rip off a 10-3 run – highlighted by a Tristen Thompson service ace and kills from Mediano, Rocha, Wright and Ashton Kershner to go up 23-9. Mediano delivered the final point with an ace to give Chico State a 25-12 victory.
The next two sets were tightly played affairs, and the Wildcats had to come from behind to win both. Chico State led 14-13 in the second set before the Broncos scored seven of the next 10 points to jump in front 20-17. A timeout helped the 'Cats regroup, and an 8-2 run – powered by three Rocha kills, winners from Mediano, Kershner and Baytosh and a Kershner/Rocha combo block – resulted in Chico State posting the come-from-behind 25-22 win.
The third set saw six tie scores and six lead changes, with Pomona finally fashioning a 23-20 advantage. Chico State once again answered, scoring five unanswered points to steal the victory – a kill by Wright, a Wright/Mediano combo block and three Broncos miscues gave the Wildcats the 25-20 win and the match sweep.
Chico State is back in action Saturday, hosting the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino (9-3, 3-1 CCAA South Division). The match gets underway at 7 p.m. in Acker Gym.
